“Heading into their 88th season of bringing live theatre to Charleston (and the second under the watch of new Executive Director Brian Porter) the Footlight Players, now in residence at the Queen Street Playhouse, will kick things off in big, bright and bold style with the regional premiere of the fresh-from-Broadway musical Head Over Heels, opening August 9th.
The musical, which just recently closed this past January on Broadway, called ‘funny & sexy, with a glorious beat’ (The Village Voice) is not your regular jukebox musical. While the show features a lineup of some of the 80’s most iconic Go-Go’s and Belinda Carlisle hits, ‘We Got the Beat’, ‘Heaven Is A Place On Earth’, ‘Vacation’, and ‘Our Lips Are Sealed’ to name a few, the story focuses on a fictional royal family in the mythical Arcadia and their wild journey to save their kingdom (its ‘beat) and follow
their hearts. The script makes clever use of the songs by weaving them into a completely unique storyline not set in the 1980’s at all but in a fictional land where anything goes…and it does.
Celebrated for its inclusivity of a wide ranging variety of race, gender and orientations, the show at its heart is a campy, sexy and romantic adventure designed to enthrall a wide range of theatregoers. The show will be directed by guest director Kyle Barnette, who helmed last year’s season opening show Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill and features a cast of 14 along with a killer live band on stage.
