Charleston Music Hall, 37 John Street, Charleston, SC
Saturday, August 10, 2019, 7 – 8pm
“Raven McKevlin, founder of Raven of Light Productions, moved next-door to Sam Hazeltine 18 years ago. She had not known someone with Down syndrome so deeply before, but it changed everything for her. A life-changing journey of friendship inspired Raven to create a documentary about Sam’s life and the importance of real inclusion, neurodiversity, the belonging of all people, and recognition of everyone’s worth and abilities. This full-length documentary film is titled Fix My Eyes.
Fix My Eyes highlights why inclusion should not be some kind of a privilege but should be a given for ALL in every community, including but not limited to schools, extracurricular activities, and jobs. The film includes interviews, photos, and other footage of Sam and his family, while also showcasing others who Raven sees as genuine change agents of this world. It shares with its audience how change has come and will continue to flourish through those who live fiercely just as they are, if only we are willing to see them through a lens of love. Fix My Eyes teaches us that people develop, learn, and succeed best when they know their deep worth, their unique gifts, and their sense of belonging in the human family. It is profoundly focused on relationships and provides a real look into the experiences of people with disabilities.
This event will be a celebration of the premiere of Fix My Eyes, presented by Raven McKevlin & Sam Hazeltine.
A native of Charleston, SC, Raven McKevlin developed a passion for creativity and storytelling as she grew up alongside the songs of the ocean, the footprints of many faced with injustice, and the bridges stretching across diverse communities.
Raven graduated from the College of Charleston with a degree in early childhood education. While her interest in education and compassion for students remain, she currently feels drawn to the art of filmmaking. Raven enjoys creating many different kinds of videos, but she specifically seeks to be a vessel in movements towards social justice, equality, openness, and God’s infinite love.
While Raven hopes to expand her films and other creative works in the future, she presently works freelance in Charleston and calls her collection of media Raven of Light Productions. Her current project is a full-length documentary titled Fix My Eyes.”
